The Road Not Taken
The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
This famous poem by Robert Frost has so much meaning. As we travel on our life journeys, with so much going on in our lives, we tend to make choices that feel comfortable for us.
Our brain has so many neuro pathways and yet, we travel the same ones over and over. We may never venture toward a new path or listen to a new point of view. We may never know what is truly available to us.
Let’s look at common ways of dealing with anger, frustration and disappointment.
Perhaps, our typical way of doing things is to move away from the situation and find a peaceful setting. Maybe you find that getting angry and blaming whoever you believe is the problem, is a solution. You might cry and go into a long depression, finding it difficult to do anything for long periods of time.
All of these are ways to survive a difficult situation. They are neither right nor wrong. They are how you do it and how you’ve learned to cope with conflicts. These choices were formed with good intentions, at an earlier time in your life. Now, they are simply comfortable, not necessarily your best option.
In Whole Life Coaching, your coach can help you to perceive the situation you’re in, in a way that may not be visible to you at this point. She/he may guide you to untangling confusing thoughts and open new “roads” to bring about clarity and new options. The way you react to your environment depends on your perceptions. What you attend to is where your energy will flow. Bringing your attention to positive life choices, will change the direction of your energy.
Give your life journey new options and perspectives by seeing the neuro pathway “roads” that you can access with practice and time. These new roads may be better suited for you at this time in your life.
